A spool may break due to the fact that when you drive around turns it puts huge stress on the rearend. But honestly with a 9 inch i would throw a spool in there. I locker may break to and a spool is cheaper. From what you said you do with the car you wont be driving it to work every day so you will be alright.

Ive never had a problem running a spool on the street. Only time you even notice it is when turning really tight corners, because the inside tire turns faster than the outside tire. All of the Pro-street guys here in Rockford run spools on the street too, and havent heard of any problems either.

I just put a spool in my Moser 12 Bolt. Straight line driving is fine, making turns is trecherous! (SP?)

When you make a turn the entire car shakes, feels like you have a flat tire. I only put about 20 miles worth of street driving on her a week, so it ain't that bad. I'll get use to it.

1 positive feature of the spool is it's super lightweight compared to the canonball posi unit. It must free up about 30lbs of rotating mass.

sounds like spool will be my choice, it's what Jay at billingsley recommends also.

I already crossed the line of streetability...

my car will be used mostly for weekend street racing and 5 or so times a month at the track.

which would be the best choice for me?

I am leaning toward the spool.

IMHO, I believe a spool is too aggressive for regular street use. I would find its drivability (or lack there of) very annoying, even though my car only gets driven 2~3 times a month. I will probably get an Eaton posi unit when the 12 bolt is ordered in the spring. I currently have the Eaton in my 4 X 4 and have nothing but good things to say about it. And it was a breeze to install. Just my .02

Terry, aren't you installing a 9" rear? If so, then the posi choices suck. I got a new Powertrax No-Slip. It's between a locker and a posi, and will hold 1000 hp. It also comes in 28, 31, and 35 spline units. There are no posi diffs for axles over 31 spline on a Ford 9".

For 35 spline axles, you are limited to a locker, or a spool, or that Powertrax unit I mentioned. BTW, I have 3.89 gears in my center section, and it's a custom aluminum job.

Question for LOnSLO...
How do you like that PowerTrax unit??
Is it noisy? Does it lock up properly?
Thanks, Jason

I haven't been able to test it yet, since my center section is still being setup. I will post results though after I flog on it

Terry, I have the ford 9" with 35 spline axles also. I took the locker out and went with a spool just for kicks I take my turns real slow and everything is cool. Get the spool and if you decide you don't like it, I still have the locker. I could work out a deal you can't refuse.

Tom,
I will keep that in mind if I don't like the spool

31 spline axled 9-inch with Strange spool.
I drive my car with Mickey T's on it always.
It's driven roughly three times a week and to any racing events legal or otherwise.
Like T the R said, take your turns nice and easy.
I almost learned the hard way the first week with it, that if you gas it while you're turning, it will continue in a turn in a hurry.
Oh yeah, and avoid having to push it in any situation where the steering wheel has to be turned.
