Default How to tell the difference between 2 and 3 series carrier?

I have a zexel torsen that I bought from a member here. I went to put it in my s10 using my factory 342 gears. When I put the torsen in, the ring gear barely even touch the ring gear teeth. Took both units and stood them up side by side and there was a 1/4 difference in where the ring gear bolted up.

So how do I know which is which? Im assuming the one that came out of my s10 is a 3 series, but not real sure.

2 series came on 2.73 and 3.08 gears

3 series came on 3.23 and numericaly higher

If you meant to say that the ring gear barely even touched the pinion gear teeth it sounds like you have 3 series 3.42 gears on a 2 series carrier

they make a spacer but its crap, the reaon the ring gear is press pit onto teh carrier is so the ring gear stays 100% concentric, with the spacer barely any of the ring gear seats on the register of the carrier thus giving the ring gear a chance to be not concentric. Some people use them with sucess, i personally wouldnt, id try and trade the 2 series for someone with a 3 series if possible

there is a spacer you can buy for them to make them work. just do a search on summit and it should pop up.

here is my take in it, the pinion is going to sit in the same place n the pumpkin regardless of what series the carrier or gear is. I know that 2 series gears are about 1/4inch taller than 3 series gears. this would lead me to believe that if you stood a 2 series carrier next to a three series carrier (stood them so that the ring gear flange was close to the ground) that the flange would be elevated by about 1/4" on the 3 series carrier.

Hope that helps,

BTW from the sound of it, I would guess you have 3 series gears on a 2 series carrier with no spacer.

Basically the 2 series case will have alower deck height(ringgear mounting surface) The 3 Series will be the taller of the two. You will not be able to use that 3.42 gear unless yourun a spacer. Otherwise you can get a thick ring gear.

If both gears have 12-41 than you have 3.42 gears which is a 3 series case. The numbers after the 12-41 are usually part #'s or/and the date codes.

wrong this is only tee dr GM gears. If they are aftermarket gears they could definately be either two or three series gear.
