Default Which pattern is better - need advice

I am trying to set up a new gear. I did a gear last year and I never got it quiet the way I wanted it. I am trying again. I tried the Ratech pinion depth tool which is really hard to use accurately. Which of these patterns is better.

For the pattern below, the pinion measures as 0.0003" too far out, which is pretty close to perfect. I had to set the backlash to .005 instead the recommended .008-.012 to get the pattern even.

Drive Side

Coast Side

The next pattern measures out as having the pinion 0.0017" too far in. The backlash on this one is .007".

Coast Side

I find it hard to tell which looks better.

I'm not an expert, but the top two pictures seem to reflect a slightly wider pattern closer to the center of the teeth.

The top ones has the most centered and smoothest contact pattern on the cost and drive side. The last pic in the lower set of pics looks lower toward the heel on the cost side , witch may cause a wine when you let off the gas or (costing)

Both are wrong and do not have enough pinion depth. What brand of gears are you using?

Thanks for looking at the picures. They are Motive gears. I tried an even deeper pinion shim. I did not think it was good enough to use but here it is.

The pinion in this case is 0.0037" too far in from the pinion marking. Does this look better, I don't like the abrupt cut off at the bottom of the teeth, seems like it is too far in? The backlash is .0065"

Open the lash up to about .010 Pattern might be off by .001 or .002 deep. I would run a .035" shim and .010 backlash. Should put you right where you want to be.

The shim I used in those last pictures was a .036" shim. So you are suggesting I go down to .035" and open the back lash a bit?

hmmm, I thought you said it was a .037". So yes if it is a .036 go with about a .034 and open the backlash up.

Okay after a 3 week delay I have tried again. Backing off the shim by mixing and matching from what I had from two install kits was fiddly but here goes.

Before, it was suggested that .033" was too far out and .036" too far in. This one is just under .035".

Back lash in .010"

Does this one look better? Thanks in advance.
