Default Strange U1603 questions

Just got my Strange U1603 for my 9" and it says on the web site that it needs some sorta shim kit if you use a stock pinion support. whats this all about? anybody used one of these that could tell me what the shim is for?

Also am i supposed to have to press the U-Joint into the yoke? I cant get the joint into the yoke by hand...

the depth for the 1603 chromemoly yoke is a bit shorter than the stock dimension. it was designed to be used with their N1922 forged aluminum big bearing support.(the ones i use with my setups). if you use a 1603 yoke on a daytona or stock pinion support, then a spacer is required to get the yoke in the correct position. the pinion nut may bottom out on the spline step of the pinion gear if not used.

a 1350 series u joint will require a small amount of clamping force to get the u-joint into the 1603 yoke. it was manufactured with very close tolerances to ensure no slop or runout of the u-joint/driveshaft. if you have no way o clamping it efficently, then use a poly type hammer to tap it in evenly a little bit each side until it seats.

thanks for the info... So i gather that the "spacer" is just a thick washer so that the pinion nut will not bottom out on the pinion shaft... Or it could go over the pinion before the yoke so that the yoke sits out farther... either way i can whittle one out on the lathe.

kind of a pain, but thats what you get when you call summit and tell them to send you a yoke for a 9inch with 1350 u-joint.

it is actually a chromemoly tube spacer made to fit between the yoke and the bearing. there is no washer to be used under the flanged pinion nut. you need a kit # n1918 to do this.

I just bought the same yoke and the spacer kit comes with 2 different size spacers. Which one are you supposed to use, thick or thin?

there are 2 different spacers... one selective and one solid. the solid spacer requires machining to set the preload correctly.

I dont know as it matters what spacer you use, just as long as the pinion nut does not bottom out on the pinion before it tightens the yoke.
