how hard are gears?

how hard are gears? i have a 2002 z m6 and want to go to 3.73 's. how hard would it be to change?on street tires think they'll hold up for a while?i really dont 1/4 mile run just alot of light to light scrimmages.thanks

Re: how hard are gears? thanks,i dont like the 4.10's its a daily driver and the wife takes it out now and then(i know i shouldnt let her <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> )and it would scare the **** out of her <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> .plus with all the highway driving i do im not into the whine that they may come with.the car is under warrantee still and the mod bug is killing me(cough cough).i was looking to pick up a little here and there.its in storage now and well im looking into this and suspension before spring.can i reset the speedo with ls1 edit?if i got to spend 175.00 for slp'sspeedo corrector mide as well spend a little mor for edit.by the way where do you purchase ls1 edit and can it be used on a lap top?

Re: how hard are gears? Do the 4.10's. Mine is a daily driver that I have 43,000 miles on. The RPM difference with the 4.10's isn't that bad. In fact adding the gears has made 6th gear more usable in my opinion. The rpm difference @ 60 between the 3.42 and 4.10 is about 600 rmps. So basically you'll be taching about 1800. I have noticed very little to no change in gas mileage. This would be one of the best SOTP mods you can do.

Re: how hard are gears? IMO, there won't be enough difference going from 3.42s to 3.73s to warrant the expense or effort. If I were going to do it I would go with 4.10s.
How hard? I wouldn't try it myself if you've never done it. It's hard (some would say damn near impossible) to set these gears up so that they are quiet.
VERY unlikely you'd ever hurt them on regular radial tires....especially if you never go to the dragstrip.

Re: how hard are gears? I am no expert mechanic and I did it and friends tell me I have little whine compared to theirs.
You have to have the measurement tools to do it right. I took the rear end out of the car to have easy access and completely rebuilt it and painted it while I had it out. It took several times of taking the diff out and putting it back in until I got it right.
I don't want anybody working on my car because most of what I see for work sucks.
It was more of a pain than doing the heads and cam. Only because it took more work to get it right. Now that I have done the cam twice, heads once, and rearend once I would say the rearend was hardest but expect it to be easier next time around.
Oh yeah, go with the 4.10s. If you wife is light on the foot she won't have a problem.

Re: how hard are gears? 1800 to 2000 rpms I've got 4:10s in mine but I'm a fraid that see is out drag racing .No just kidding, see will be find my wife drives it all the time. Re: how hard are gears? I have had 4.10's in my 10 bolt before I installed my 12 bolt. The rear help up fine. I even raced at the track with them running a best of 11.81 @ 119 mph. So if your going to be doing street driving you'll be fine .. plus if you find a good shop they will make them quiet .. Just get a good set of gears and you will be <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
