Default Moser 9" install question

I just slid the axles in and noticed that the backing plate wasn't completely flush with the housing. The bearing is sticking out about 1/16". I tried tapping it in with a rubber mallet and then tried screwing it in with the backing plate bolts and stripped out one of the nuts. Any suggestions?

I think the bearings on a 9" stick out a little bit. They should do it on both sides. Are they sliding in past the o-ring?

they didnt stick out on mine.

what kind of posi are you using? I had a stock one originaly, and apparently they have two peice spider gears, I had to turn one of the axles to get the two peices to line up. I dont know if any other diffs are like that, but it might be worth a try.

Yeah the o-rings were inside the housing. I'm using an Auburn diff. It just doesn't seem right that the backing plate wouldn't be completely flush with the housing. What do you mean you couldn't get the two pieces to line up? What wouldn't line up?

Man it's pretty close, they're only sticking out about .020". Just enough to see the threads on the 4 backing plate bolts.

the stock posi (I used a ford center from a friend at first) has a two piece spider gear on at least one side. and the splines werent lined up exactly right on the pieces.

but if you are only sticking out that far I doubt thats the problem

did you use the spacers in between the bearing and the axle flange?

No that's only for LT1 cars. Thanks for clearing that up though. I think it'll be ok too. I'm going to use locktite on the bolt threads just in case.

Did you install the oil seal in the axle tube, and, if so, are you sure it is fully seated? We had to literally beat mine in with a large socket to get it to seal completely. I would think that if the seal is either not fully pressed in, or is crooked, the axle bearing would not go in the axle tube fully.

Not likely, but it also could be that the bearing was pressed on the axle too far or not far enough. My 12 bolt had 1/8" shims that were to be used on 93-97 brakes, maybe those came on yours, and were pressed on in between the axle and the bearing.

Just a couple of thoughts, some things to check. Good luck, let us know. Shawn

Edit: Just saw you already checked for the spacer, and it wasn't used.

Are you talking about the red ring with the rubber seal? Dammit, I just found those under some papers. Do those get pressed into the outside of the axle housing or the inside by the differential? I hope I don't have to tear this damn thng down again.

Yeah, the red ring with the seal inside. Those get pressed (hammered) into the axle tube, smooth side out, until they FULLY REST AGAINST THE LIP that is in the axle tube. They are necessary as they will stop most of the fluid trying to leak out the axle tubes. The bearing itself will stop some, but it will probably leak like a sumbitch without that seal. You don't have to tear anything down, just pull the axles out, and tap the seal in there (using a big socket, and be sure that it doesn't go in there crooked), and reinstall the axles through the seal.
