Default DIY 12 bolt

has anyone built their own 12 bolt from old cores? i have 3 from mid 60's impalas. can get more them dirt cheap, like $40 to $75 each. not too worried about shorting and welding. got a machine shop where i work at my disposal. just what do i need to keep my ABS? i don't have tracion control if that matters. i don't go to the strip for the main reason of grenading the 10 on slicks. plan on switching to GW or BMR torque arm. also, anybody notice a loss in MPG when a switch to a 12? hopefully i can save $$$$ so i can put it towards cam and ls6 heads

hardest part is the torque arm mount. If you can figure that out, then you should be in luck, I still have not seen any pics of a homebuilt one, with TA mount.

for the ABS, you have a sensor in the center section, im not sure what it takes to keep that.

Most other parts (non abs) can be transfered off a stock donor rearend

not too worried about welding the mounts. plan on making a jig. do 1, do all. main concern is the pickup for the ABS. does anybody know/have pix where they are mounted on the aftermarket assemblies?are they on the ring gear like stock or somewhere on the axles?

if it is a 4 channel housing w/ tcs and abs, the rings are on the outside of the backing plates, around the ends of the axles. piece of cake, if it's a 3 channel, i dont know aobut that. another diffrence in the old style housing is thay they were c-clip styles. you technically could order the axles and housing ends from moser and work around them that'd be your best bet. thet start w/ a backing plate and a 9" style bearing on ends of the axles which eliminates the c-clips, ples it's just a better design. make no mistake here, this is going to be alot of work, but if i had to do it all over again, i would have bought the bolt in 9" housing and axle package for 950, and worked up from there. center sections are everywhere, and parts for them are dirt cheap. it's basically just a compilation of a ton of diffrent things.

that aside, if youre set on it, go for it man. and good luck.

Moser uses a custom made abs reluctor ring that's welded to the flange on the carrier. Then there's a machined area where the sensor bolts in the housing to contact the ring. That part is easy.

As far as the torque arm goes, I personally don't think welding a mount to the cast housing will be strong enough. If it were, Moser / Strange wouldn't have wasted big $$ developing a custom cast housing for their 12 bolts.

It is doable for a 9" so it must be possible with a 12 bolt also!!!!!

thanks for the responses- some more thoughts-
moser and strange start with new casting- they can just have cast in right away.
since the impala housing are much wider, they would have to be cut down and rewelded anyways
here is another idea for a donor- the 8.5 out of a 4.3 HO 5 speed s10. i wonder if thye ABS is set up in one of those trucks like a f-body. i haven't gotten to a yard to measure one, 4x2 or 4X4, look close. an 8.5 10 bolt isn't that much weaker than a stock 12 bolt. they use the same axles and pinions stock

I remember being told about an 8.5" 10 bolt that came in GM trucks. Would the wheel base be the same?

width, not wheel base. wheel base is the distance between the centerlines of the front and rear most axle. the corperate GM 8.5's guts (diff, gears, bearing)are pretty much all interchangable from trucks and cars since the early 70's. i would imagine a full size truck i much too wide. need shorting. i haven't checked any late model fullsize 8.5's to see where the abs pick ups are at. work too much
