Default Need help ASAP

so i was driving home and my car left me

when put the car in drive the car makes a loud grinding noise and does not run and the spedometer is like in 10-15 mph

i can go in reverse but it makes a loud thump noise every foot it moves,

know my question is do you guys think its the rear-end or the transmission

thanks

the reason is because i have warranty on the tranny but the place is like 2 hours from my house, and if the problem was the rear-end then i'd just rather fix it somewhere nearby

thanks again

i need to fix this by the end of this weekend
by the way i did have an issue with rear end it was making a loud whining noise for the past month and told it could have been pinion bearing or carrier bearing

maybe the bearings fell off?

I had a guy call me several years ago, and he told me his rear was making a noise that he wanted me to check out. He was about 100 miles from my shop when he called to say the car wouldn't move any further. I was planning on being at a dragstrip some 20 miles away from where his car was the next day and I told him I would take our roll back and pick his car up. Once we had the car back at the shop we saw where the pinion seal had been leaking for some time, slinging gear lube all over the bottom of the car. We removed the rear cover and saw something I hadn't ever seen before. There were no teeth left on the gears... Bob

You would be better off finding a used 10 bolt to replace it with. These rears are weak and I wouldn't put too much money into one. Bob

Do you have a traction control button the the dash? If you don't you have just ABS. Bob

But yeah, im pretty sure 3 channels have the harness coming from the top of the pumkin. im goin with a rebuilt kit and motive gears also. check out thunder racing.com, they got some good prices and kits.

Is this your and your dad's first time re-gearing??? Its not too difficult. I assume you know the tools you need and have access to them. My only other advice is to be **** about it!

Be VERY clean. Very organized. Have a pad and pen ready to jot down notes and measurements. Have the specs for the final set up handy, and try to get as close as possible. If not...you might be replacing those gears soon too. With those rears being time bombs as it is.

I would just put the new gears in with the shims all the same as they are now. SOMETIMES...and I do mean SOMETIMES...they will work out and you wont have to change much. Thats where the organize part comes in. Make sure you keep your shims in order and on the same sides etc. If you do make changes...write them down. So if you go the wrong way (easy to do) you can go back to your starting point.

If you run into any issues...post up! Good luck! Its not hard work..just tedious at times.

Yup...those links will help ya. You need a dial indicator with a magnetic base...or some good form of attachment. You will need a set of calipers to measure shim thicknesses. To set pinion pre-load you'll need an in-lbs wrench...beam style. Has to be able to measure lower torques like 20 in-lbs or so. You'll want a bigger torque wrench for ring bolts, cap bolts etc.

Other than that, you need a method to remove bearings. Some people use pullers, some people use a press, some people cut the bearings off with a dremel. Its up to you. You might even be able to rent some of the tools from autozone or the like.

Good luck and if you run into any snags, post up and we'll try to give you a hand.

just finished my rear end, it turned out good, took me about 7 hours total,
now i found out my tranny crapped out on me aswell.

the car runs in reverse fine, but when i put it in D the car makes a loud whining noise, from the transmission, and speedometer runs at about 10-12 mph

any ideas what it can be?

and maybe price to fix that problem?

the reason is that i have warranty on the trans but the place is like 70 miles from my house and i would have to pay to get it towed there ~$200

maybe if its a small problem i can just get the work done in a transmission shop nearby

thanks for all the help
