Not sure how to shift race style

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
the concept of speed shifting is to not let off the gas.
you pull or push the shifter toward the next gear while you are acelerating still, not so hard that you force it out of gear but hard enuff that it moves quickly when it is time to shift.
when it is time to shift all you do is bump the clutch real quick, you are all ready pulling on the shifter so it just jumps into the next gear and the nose of the car may not even drop.
report back after you try it.

disclamer...i don't even have a stick, might want to hold off till someone else confirms what i said, that is exacly how i have done it on other cars and from what i understand the 6speed is a prety stout unit and should be able to take it.

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
thats what i do.i got a 2002 z and when im on her the gas pedal never leaves the floor.i dont know is its because its new or what but still have a tough time negotiating the gears.it seems like there is to much effort needed to shift.1-2 is fine....2-3 can be a pig....3-4 your wondering if you put it back to second...and then if im cruising on the expressway and im in 6th if i go for 4th i always wind up in fifth if i speed shift it.i dont know if thats the way the factory shifter is or if it needs more breakin time.(my wife has a 95 neon 5 speed ya ya but it still not a civic...and i can rip through them gears without hesitation or miss)ive been thinking of going aftermarket shifter but i want to drive with one first to see how they are before i get one.its like im new to standards in this car. but back to the point...keep the gas down and shift baby ya shift away!

HUH on that last part??4th is down 5th is up, how do you miss like that? Get a B&M Ripper. How many times have you banged the rev limiter? Speed Shifting is NOT holding the gas to the floorboard, that's power shifting, it's very bad for the tranny and clutch. SPEED shifting is what I do, You are pulling the car out of gear as the pedal is going down, you back off the gas just enough to HOLD the current RPM with no load on the motor, and as the clutch pedal is coming back up you are pushing the shifter into the next gear. It's still a VERY fast shift but takes the load off the tranny, and keeps you from banging the limiter should you miss a shift.

The B&M ripper cleaned up the 3rd gear shift on my 2002 Z-28 a bunch and helped the 4-5 and 5-6 shift feel much less like a "W" pattern, it still has a slight step, but not as bad (I'll take my award for the longest LS1 tech sentence now...thank you). They make a little noise (no rubber bushing, but the shifter is worth it!
While power/speed shifting....DO NOT MISS A GEAR!!! The magical 3-2 (instead of 3-4) powershift usually makes for bent pushrods and other nasties....just thought I'd mention that. Have fun!

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
of the topic a little but harlem is making a drag cags.it will use your solenoid that locks out second to work backwards!it will either be speed or rpm based to help save us on those miss shifts!definately got to get one!

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
A safer way to learn to speed shifting (rather then learning at Wide Open Throttle and blowing a motor) is to practice at 1/2 or 3/4 throttle. First, to gauge the difference speed shifting makes, shift your car normal at 4,000 rpms like you would during a daily drive. Now for the fun part. Start off easy to reduce the amount of wheel spin. Press the gas pedal about 3/4 of the way down and when the car gets to about 4,000 and feels like it's about to stop pulling push the clutch in and shift without changing your position of the foot on the gas pedal. It should be one fluid motion. As the clutch is going down the gear shifter is being pulled back. By the time you hit neutral the clutch is to the floor. The slam it into second and let the clutch up as fast as you can. If for some reason you miss second lift off the gas immediately. At least when you learn this way you still have about 2,000 rpms or so of cushion before you run into engine damage. Even with an after market shifter I would not try a 2 to 3 power shift. With as easy as our shift forks bend it is too easy to miss a gear with a horizontal movement in the throw. Bottom line....practice, practice , practice. Start at lower rpms first before you try it at the redline.
Once you get that down...write back and us M6 guys will tell you how to break the tires loose from a 40 mph roll on downshift into second.

Aite... I've been driving sticks all my life and have the speed shifting part down... but tell me some more about this "breaking it loose at 40"

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
Breaking loose at 40...that's easy...find a nice flat stretch of road...Pull the car out of whatever gear you are in and put it into neutral. Let the clutch out. Then push the cluth back in and bring your rpms up to 5,500-6,000rpm put the car into second, pop the clutch and hold on for dear life.

Re: Not sure how to shift race style
damn... all I see is myself going through tires faster... I have a hard enough time keeping enough self control to not do too many burnouts.

The best is doing that along side a ricer. They look at you like .

you want to
1.get the car going up to 40mph.
2.push the clutch in and drop the shifter into neutral.
3.release the clutch all the way out
4.hit the gas and rev the engine up so that the RPMs match what they would be if the car was in 2nd gear going 40 mph(basicaly get the rpm over 5K)
5.push the clutch back in
6.drop the shifter into 2nd(it should slip right in if you match the rpm correctly...the synchros don't need to mech)
7.release the clutch(pop it out)
8.floor the gas.
it takes some practice, but once you get used to it it take about 1-2 sec.
