Default fair price for gear swap?

I dropped off a Moser 12bolt that worked perfectly to a driveline shop to get the gears changed to 4.11's. I also included a Moser set-up kit with new bearings.

What do you think is a fair price to have all of this installed? They originally told me $236, but now that it is done they are telling me it came out to $430. Is that right?

Thanks!

You should have gotten a ritten estimate first, now they have you by the *****, 236.00 sounds about right, i myself wouldn't spend over 150.00 (with me supplying parts) for a 3rd. member set-up, all you can do at this point is argue your case, sounds like there takeing you for a ride

Do you have an itemized receipt? i.e. labor was this much, fluids were this much, tax was this, shop fees/etc was that...did they need to replace any other parts when they were in there?

The price doesn't sound outrageous, but a touch high..

I will find all of this out tomorrow morning when I pick it up. I supplied all of the parts and asked them to fill the diff with their own fluids. So there's about $30 I guess. Looks like I'm paying a premium for this shop in particular, they are highly recommended.

This is why I usually do all of own work.

I did, however, supply the Royal Purple diff fluid. That only cost $20, though.

Did you just do the ring and pinion, or did you do all of the bearings and crap from a set-up kit?

So....what was the reason for the big jump in price???

Regardless of who did it, or how good their reputation is, $430 is a bit high no matter what...especially with doing the job on a rear that isn't even in a car...

I rebuilt a buddy's stock 10 bolt a few weeks ago. (no different, just slightly smaller, obviously)

New Motive ring & pinion
New carrier bearings
New pinion bearings (inner & outer)
New pinion seal
New axle bearings
New axle seals

He supplied all parts. I supplied labor, gear oil, rtv, etc...

The rear was still in car, I don't have a lift here at the house so I quoted and charged $300...basically a hundred bucks an hour, because that's what I felt the job was worth, regardless of how long it took me. Drivetrain rebuilds are what I do for a living, so I did it as a favor, more or less. The rear's done right, it's dead quiet, and he's happy...

To nearly double the charges on what should be a simple job for a shop who knows what they are doing, is BS imho...
