How hot are rearends suppose to get??
Just had AAMCO tranmission put gears in a car (10 bolt) i was driving on the highway and smelled burned grease, like the pinion was slinging it on the drivshaft, got under the car and the rear end itself is smoking a bit...checked the temp with a laser temp meter and the axle cover was 231 degrees!!! The rear end isn't making any gear noise that i could tell whatsever. Just runs SUPER hot...whats up with that?

Until the break-in proceeds a little further it will run hot. Compare it to a car with 1000's of miles on it. The broken in axle is warm but not hot. With my 410s this year, after my 3'rd easy drive which brought me to a total of 200 km the center of the differential case was 190oF. I am now at probably 2000 kms and the temperature is much lower now although I have not measured it. The better the gear install the lower the temperature. My 373s I was learning and had a hum, the axle was noticeable hotter than with the 410s which I nailed the first try.

There's a break-in procedure for new gears that involves running it on jack stands for a bit and then a few short trips--letting it cool after each session. Otherwise it builds up lots of heat. Your fluid is probably in need of a change.
