Default Weight Reduction

What can be done to reduce the weight of the 2010 Camaro 2SS? It's a hefty beast, which is ok for the most part, but I was wondering what it would be like if it were a couple hundred lbs leaner. I was thinking

1. remove the back seats. Can this be done in a clean way--without leaving a gaping mess behind?

2. replace the axle with a carbon fibre axle. I am unsure how many lbs less this would be.

3. replace the hood with a carbon fibre hood. I don't know if this is an option--I haven't seen any cf hoods for the 2010 yet.

4. replace the doors??

I am reaching here. Any references you can point me to, or methods you have used?

I don't know if these are things you would want to do, but I'll throw it out there. Aftermarket seats, smaller rims if the brakes allow it, aftermarket stereo and take out all the speakers except two, take out the windshield washer accessory, take out the spare {I don't know if they come with one}, take out the insulation under the hood and doors, take off the engine cover, headers and aftermarket exhaust, lightweight pulleys, take out the AC accessory, take out the window motors. All of that is a good amount of weight without really stripping it.

You just destroyed a 40,000 dollar car.

50-60 lbs. can be shaved with lite weight forged wheels. More, if you go to 18-19" wheels/tires...

"True" carbon fiber body panels (hood/fenders/trunk lid/spoiler) would get you to 100+, in total. c/f doors without side beams and lexan glass would shave a bunch more.

200 is not all that difficult, but you'll not have nearly as many creature comforts as you do now...

Easiest way to remove 400 lbs would be to get a C6.

Its pretty easy to take weight off the Zeta platform and not look too stripped. I've been able to take off roughly 300lbs without too much effort.

Start with removing the engine covers and misc plastic. -5lbs

Replace battery with lighter version. -20lbs

Replace full OEM exhaust with longtubes, xpipe, and lighter mufflers. -73lbs (30 headers, 24 mufflers, 19 mid pipe)

Back seat as already stated. Bottom doesn't weight much but the back has a few lbs in it. -15

There is a few lbs in the child seat retention system underneath the rear seats. -5lbs.

Lighter wheels as already stated. Could be up to 100lbs depending on how drastic you go.

OnStar box an battery. -5lbs

Trunk Liner. -3lbs

Remove factory speakers and replace with good speakers up front. -10lbs

Hoodliner. - 3lbs

Factory airbox. Replace with aftermarket. -4lbs

Foam block and airpump in trunk. -7lbs

Drain windshield washer tank.

Run a half tank or less of fuel.

Remove floor mats.

Sound deadening under carpet... similar to the old light weight carpet once removed. -10lbs

Mid tunnel brace. -3

Rear subframe weights if you have them. -7lbs

Driver/Passenger seats are heavy 50-60lbs each. Easily replaced with race seats.

I was able to drop from a race weight of 4,000lbs down to the 3,6xx range without replacing the seats just all the little things that add up.

The weight of the exhaust and wheels leads me to believe that GM has some weight savings potential from the factory if they so choose. Perhaps they will use this avenue to keep the weight down on the Z28....

remove the AC compressor. lines. control arms. go tubular.

take out window regulators

change out glass to lexan

take the motors out of front seats.

suspension bolt ins!

While I see your point and am not sure if it truly matters to him or not, I personally don't put 'back seat removal' in the same category with 'AC and/or power window motor removal', but that's just me.
I've pulled the seats (mere bolts) out of my LS1 Z28 but never once even considered pulling the AC (draining refrigerant, disconnecting multiple lines/tubes, wiring etc.).

Yeah LOL, I know she also wanted those center console gauges (I really like them as well) and I think the only way to get them (at the time at least) was to go with the 2SS.

Iforged has their new "Race Series" wheels available in awesome looking profiles. They are supposed to be super light but super strong. Wheels would definitely cut down on weight.

Also, there's a few companies that will be coming out with solid axle conversions for the 2010 Camaro sometime soon. Would save ALOT of weight and be more durable. Keep your eyes peeled for them.

Putting on an aftermarket exhaust will shed a bunch of weight too. Those freakin "gas-tank" looking mufflers are huge and weigh alot. I think you can shed like 40-50 lbs by ditching them.

Tubular K-members and control arms as well as aftermarket trailing arms, toe arms, etc will save you weight. Check out spohn or bmr.

Then you can save a little here and there with small things... Back seat, etc

I am slowly getting weight out of my 2010. I should have all the seam sealer and sound deadener finished tomorrow. I will post the weight when I get done.

I just can bring myself to start tearing out all the parts, I like my car with no squeeks or funny noises. I've thoughth about selling it and buying the body in white and getting serious about racing again. I like the fact now that I can drive my car around when I want.

Well that's it,either you want the ultimate strip and go with the white body or sacrifice and go with the production and not excpect that much of a decrease in weight.
