Actually, based on the specs this 5.0 DOHC motor is going to be even harder than prior Ford POS engines to get more power out of. The block is already maxed out displacement wise, and with DOHC, factory shorty headers, and a 6500 rpm peak power point, simple improvements are going to be very limited. To be fair, this engine, on paper at least, looks to be very impressive in stock form. Coupled with the new mustang staying around 3600 lbs (in base form anyway) I am impressed by the mustang for the first time in a VERY long time. Don't expect the kind of power gains out of it n/a that LS guys are used to, but you have to give them credit in stock form.

I am really hoping for some 3.73 or 3.90 gears as an option for 2011. No way is the weight going to drop, and as much as I would like to see them drop in a revised cam or something to bring hp to about 440, I have a feeling we will have to wait until 2012. I think they will want to save that hp boost to help sales in 2012 when the excitement starts to wear thin. It will be really hard to see the Mustang (potentially) be faster than the Camaro though, so I hope they do something to stay ahead.

I must admit, I will probably buy a 2011 SS either way, they are available to order in April. I am ready to run my S10 off a cliff.

Don't forget the 5.0 is getting direct injection soon. That should pump the power to at least 430. Throw an intake, tune and exhaust coupled with the lighter curb weight and you have a damn good performer. Not bad at all for an N/A 5 liter.

I do believe that it will have direct injection (along with variable valve timing etc.) right from the get go (not added later on) and will be making 412hp with it, not 430.

I agree, the car should run very well in stock/near stock trim.

As far as I've read in the new hotrod and at the autoshow, they say it's setup for DI but won't get it till the following year, but who knows they might have changed that. And you're right it probably won't have 430, more like 412-420.

I keep wishing for a 427 mid level motor. One notch above the LS3 and one notch below the SC Z28.
Hell I would be happy with an LS7 block, PM rods, wet sump oiled, LS3 heads and intake. Make 470 HP and call it an LS8 or 5.
