solid axle conversion ?
But, you're only further supporting my statement it's just plain stupid to buy a brand new IRS car to convert it to SRA.
A F-body, Fox body, or Cobra Jet are all obviously better choices for someone who wants a SRA.
I don't know why anyone would argue the obvious.
As for the weight, look at the Mustang, its a heavy pig of a car. So is the Challenger. The weight of the car is actually condusive to the use of a solid axle if you want to drag race the car.
I'm not saying its a requirement just pointing that out. If I wanted to build a Camaro drag car with a solid axle, I'd get a low option stripper, and then I'd remove everything I wans't going to use and sell the parts to re-coup some of the fund outlay. In that way I could keep what I needed, and could get rid of what I didn't.
Again, if you feel like its stupid to convert a car to a solid axle, that great. Its YOUR opinion. It doesn't make it any more correct than anyone else. Thats fine don't go build a Camaro with a solid axle. When you inevitable see people do it, you can roll your eyes and smugly tell yourself how stupid those people are, and assure yourself of how smart you really are.
I've had a lot of friends in Australia who have been drag racing the Holden platform for 10 years. Some keep the IRS, and some don't. The older Holden (just like this platform) is a big heavy pig that breaks IRS parts as soon as you apply any real power to it. That is why folks like Pedder's and BMR have a whole line of parts to TRY to keep the rear alive.
You got folks like Thomas and others who have created kits to put an 8.8 IRS centersection out of a Mustang into a GTO.

Ironic. You're being a smart *** about my respect for the Viper rear that has run 7's with a manual trans and you STILL can't tell me there is a better IRS than the Viper's.
Save the lecturing for somone who doesn't live in a glass house.

It's 2009. Solid rear axels have NO place on new cars....or in the century.
Besides, if you are going to build a drag car, there is NO reason to buy new.
Especially if you are going to upgrade everything.
99% of drag cars are pieces of
Some people like to be different and race something new...Like me
As for me i would rather beef the irs up a little than convert to a solid axle..It can take a lot of power and hook better if built correctly....Just my 2
I found a company making front subframes that are about half the weight of the OE ones. I am curious why no one has made a rear replacement one to lighten the weight of the car and or make one so you could bolt in a solid axle rear.
