300 Hp V6?
I have heard that the base camaro will be offered with a 300 horse 3.9 DOHC V-6. Has anyone heard about this? It would be a slap in the face to ford because their mustang GT only makes 300 HP, and I heard thats why GM is doing it. A 300 HP V-6 might interest me as a daily driver. It would run 13's, maybe low 13's with intake and tune, and could get up to 30 mpg. Not to mention if it's the base model price will be cheaper. Is it possible for GM to offer a base camaro with this much power?

I've heard about this but I am unsure if it'll really happen as it'll be placing the car and its v-8 brother on much higher ground, and pricing.
Everyones picking up mustangs so to put the base model on the level power wise with the GT, will turn off some people as truth is most people who drive these cars have the 6 don't want or need tons of power. Even with newer tech making a nice 300 Hp car with good milage, i think the public might be a bit leary that somehow it makes the same power as a older v8 camaro or a new mustang GT with a v8 does.
Now its great news for car nuts, but most people arn't even those who drive sports cars.
I think in this case, it'll depend on marketing, and it might be smarter to not offer this unless they will offer it as a sporty v-6 maybe.

does any one think that this'll be a supercharged? Kinda like the other SS cars or the 3rd gen bird.
As far as it being a slap in the face od the mustang, the Maxima already did that in the 90's. and people still baught those mustangs.
Anyway, I would love to see it happen but I myself am done with 6cyl f bodys.

I think the current 3.9 makes 240, I heard that's what will be in the base Camaro. I could be wrong but who knows. The 3.9 is in just about every GM car avaiable that's not a vette.

Whatever liter they choose, 3.6 or 3.9 they've got an incredibly seasoned and strong platform. If you think, its based off the 3.8's that have been in most gm granny cruisers to GNX's. I wouldn't be surprised if they could pull off close to 300 crank with that revised 6cyl block.

If Nissan can make 306hp out of a 3.5L NA V6, why can't GM make 300hp from a 3.9L? I understand there are other factors to consider, like reliability and the shape of the torque curve, but hp numbers sell cars. It's all marketing, and I don't thing GM gets that....

GM understands marketing just fine, and there's very little market for a performance V6 version of a Muscle car. People who buy a Camaro for performance are going to get the V8, and people who buy them for looks/economy don't want nor need a 300HP V6. Something around 240HP is more than enough, the car only weighs 3500lbs, it will be plenty quick with that much power. Insurance rates would also go up if the V6 was considered a perforance model with 300HP, which counters one of the reasons people buy the V6 model, for lower insurance premiums.
