Default What is a Camaro

Who came up with the name Camero? I've owned some, sold some, even raced some. But I don't remember, even in 1967 why the car was called a Camero.

Does it have two legs
" " four "
" " swim
" " fly

The Cuda was a fish before they shortened the name.

The Mustang began as a Mustang. Nothing more than a Falcon with a different skin.

Just wondering since the NEW Camero is being designed if a little more thought had gone into the name if the car never would have gone away in the first place?

Some of you don't like the shape. Everyone is worried about the engine. I worry about the price, performance, handling, and brakes. I'll be required to sell the car, so it's natural for me to worry about that stuff. I also worry if the car should have a name change? Is GM dumb enough to think if we call it the Camero everyone will buy it because it's called a Camero. Hello is anyone home?

I'm pretty sure that "Camaro" is a French term or word for friend. Hope that help. Sorry it doesn't mean anything cooler than that.

It was never called CAMERO .. ITS CAMARO! !

They've changed the style of the car 5 times now -- this will be the fifth generation CAMARO .. should they have changed the name every time ?? People love that name and its not the name that made the car go away ..

Are you dumb enough to think that GM made a random car than decided to call it a camAro to help their sales -- Im pretty sure thats not how the process went .. They decided to bring back the CamAro so their design is based on older models -- if you look at that car you can see body lines from the first generations .. Thats why the car is called a camAro -- your entire thread makes no sense.

** Does reading the spelling in this thread **** anyone else of every time they see that E in camEro**

I think the name Camaro stems from the word Camaron, or shrimp/friend/nasty bowel movement from what a book of mine tells me...not kidding either.

Exclamation Here is what Wikipedia said

Though the car's name was contrived with no meaning, GM researchers reportedly found the word in a French dictionary as a slang term for "friend" or "companion." In some automotive periodicals before official release, it was code-named "Panther," however, the project designation for the Camaro was XP-836 and some early GM photos show the final Camaro body labeled "Chaparral". Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers "What is a Camaro?", and they were told it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs". The name conveniently fit Chevrolet's "C" naming structure that included Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette.

Not French bro. Also not friend. Friend in French is "Ami or Amie" depending on usage.
Companion is "Compagnon"

Camaro is most closely translated into Spanish with the word Camaron I believe which means shrimp.

Here is an example...

Type "Shrimp" into the box and select from English to Spanish... Voila! CAMARON

Camaro was picked as a name meaning "Commrade" or "Friend"

A very fitting and appropriate name if you ask me.

And yes, I will begin to threaten bans for using a E in the name.

This vid should put this question to rest. You can watch the whole thing or jump to 0:50 and listen to Scott Settlemire explain where and why Chevrolet used the "TERM" Camaro for their new car.

First of all, learn how to spell Camaro. Camaro is latin for camara which means friend and some of the other definitions given above. Camara is slang for camarada which means commrade.
