Switchgrass ethanol
Well....here's some good news on the energy front. I just saw an article about switchgrass - a northamerican perennial. This stuff produces 540 percent MORE energy than it takes to grow. This put the lousy 25 percent yielded from corn ethanol to shame.
I guess we'll be running our 2010's on grass!
Now that's some good news for us finally. The DOE has invested $1.2 billion in refineries since last November - the first to be working in Georgia, I believe. This is incredible news. Not only that, but it can be grown in farm land that is not being used and we are paying for. That's more good news.

Enjoy!

Arnold! Pay attention.

We have a **** load of area to grow such things. Desalinization plants piped to the deserts with gigantic greenery's could work. So such things could be in the middle of the nation and not causing more overpopulation.

Ive read a few articles on this and as far as I can tell the switchgrass is not ready to be made into ethanol yet. The switchgrass is missing a few things that the corn has so it is a few years away yet. ill try to find a link to one of the articles if i can find one.

why is this in the 2010 camaro forum???
some corn ethanol plants are being built to also do switchgrass or other bio-mass, some are not. corn is a poor choice and way overhyped.

Yeah, Whiskey and Rum burn different. So it's possible for one to burn with less smoke (pollution) or put out more energy, etc. Although he is right, either way its ethanol and it'll run a car.

Ethanol has less BTU/unit compared to Gasoline, but really that shouldn't stop us from using it. The high octane-equivalent of ethanol helps to offset the loss in BTU content by allowing higher compression, more efficient engines, and for FI engines higher boost levels. This also helps with fuel economy. An engine built specifically for ethanol will rival a gasoline engine in the MPG department.
The faster that this Switchgrass ethanol comes out, the better off the US will be after oil production declines. I really hope this process can be perfected. It takes the strain off the Corn industry and should bring prices back down.
