Not sure why anyone cares about this. I mean, it's not like the 4th gen SS was any faster than the 4th gen Z28. Sure, the SS package gave you an ever-so-slightly better flowing muffler and a hood that might help HP after 130mph, but the heavier 17X9 wheels offset those tiny power gains. The FASTEST stock (NOT counting SS/Firehawks with SLP options such as dual/dual or Blackwing) LS1 F-bodies were stripper Z28s with zero options. They all make the same power, so the nod for fastest goes to the lightest car.
And, like I've been saying for quite some time now, the "Z28" badge goes better with GM's current supercar line-up (ZR1, ZO6) than SS. SS is just the top option trim/engine level for regular, unlimited production Chevys ranging from Impala to Cobalt. SS is too watered down at this point to be the "supercar". Z28 is assoicated with one car and one car only: Camaro. You can't say that about SS, which is why it makes more sense to use Z28 for the highest level, limited production supercar.
Here is what GM needs to do:
- Base V6 car (300hp, 3.6L VVT), maybe offer a cosmetic package as an "RS" model.
- SS (405hp, 6.2L LS3), should be offered as everything from a stripper to a fully loaded car.
- Z28 (505-525hp, some version of the supercharged LSA engine), limited production supercar, to compete with GT500, etc.
