So far everyone is right, really. You can do a good stroker(all forged, well assembled) for under 10k. < Way under 10k.

And that's including the little crap like a FAST intake manifold and throttle body along with a tune.

Many people forget too that you have to either set the car up for a dry-sump Engine, or convert the LS7 to wet-sump style, so there is some more money there..

For 15k you should be able to do a rear end, trannie with a stall and nice long block which will put down a tad bit over 500 horse to the wheels.

Of course I have no money and have nothing to do, so I have been pricing some things this morning.

And all of this should be able to be done for right around 15k. A nice stroker short block, some nice heads, a decent cam package along with a FAST manifold with a 92mm TB+ a 9" rear end and a quality built 4L60E with a nice stall. . . . Oh I wish I money.

When I was gonna buy a stroker for my car there was a 408 at a local shop with Diamond pistons, Eagle rods, and a Callies crank with ported 243s on for $5K, and if im not mistaken don't then LS1 accessories swap over? For $15K you could have a HELLACIOUS car, not engine, CAR, built 6 speed, Strange S60, engine, some suspension parts and be ready to go. IMO if you want something to be a competitor on the street and go to the track and put up some numbers, but don't want to spend alot just stick with the LS1 you can go mid to low 11s with a WELL PLANNED/PUT TOGETHER LS1. I went 11.6X-11.8X with full exhaust, lid and 100 shot (dry). With what I got now when the track opens back up we'll see what she'll turn out.

Ok maybe I was a little over on the price. Here is how I came out. Im sure I could go cheaper but this is what I came up with. End goal would be roughly 550whp, keep it drivable, and keep all the creature comforts.

Block $3,475.00

Heads and Cam I chose AFR 205cc(maybe I need the 225cc Im not sure) with an MS4 Cam. With the Adjustable Timing Chain, Heads and Cam Gasket package, and the TSP Ported Oil Pump. $3,165.97

FAST 92 and NW 92 TB $1,249.99

TSP 1 7/8 Headers +3" ORY $609.99

Then there's tuning HP Tuners $500 Im buying the software this Winter to tune my current combo. I would probably just have someone tune this engine.

Total just here is $8,998+shipping

Then my friend told me about some other stuff I missed Rocker Arms, Valves/Springs(not sure if they come with the heads), and various other parts.

Plus I wouldnt do any of it myself, I dont have the much expertise. So who knows how much it is to build it. Then the removal of the old and install of the new(I know this would be the same regardless of what combo I went with).

I may be a little off on exactly what it would cost but me and my friend just threw out 15k realisticly when everything is said and done. If I cant get the car sold a Built T56 will go in this year and I already have a 12 bolt.

______

If I went the LS7 route this is what I came up with roughly.

LS7 Crate from Jegs for $13,000

Mild Cam from whoever I can find. Say around $600 or so.

Headers not sure on what would work for a LS7 in a Forumla say $1000 to be safe

Thats all I can think of right off hand. That would be a total of $14,600. So add install and tune there say $1,500(again have no idea how much this would be).

So there is my logic in my pricing.

Still, much cheaper to go non-LS7... But hell man, if you got the 15+ to throw down.... DO IT! LS7's are bad ***.

you forgot about the ls7 being a dry sump oil system...your ls1 is wet sump...gonna add some extra bucks for the hardware and install for that too

"Why do LSX stroker shortblocks cost 6K and Gen 1 383 shortblock's run 2200-2400"

come on man....you know it ain't cheap to ship the LSx to heaven and have god lay his finger on it.

hell if you REALLY want a 427, they are several vendors that build them. i know VRE use to.

No.. that's what I was saying too..

You have to buy the Hardware to set it up to a wet-sump System, or convert the Car to a dry sump..which in a way wouldn't be that hard if you have the space to mount an Oil Resivoir.

I've thought about it with my Camaro since I have AC Delete, that's a perfect place for a little Oil Resevoir.

Could I build a 408 with the current block? Would just a different rotating assembly get me some more cubes(like 400+)+ Pistons Rods, etc.? Mainly what Im asking is, does the stock LS1 have enough bore?

No... If i am not mistaken, the "ls1"(346c.i.) bore will only go to a max of 3.908. The stock bore is 3.898, which dont give much. It will however fit 4inch crank as opposed to the stocker's 3.622 stroke. most guy's will bore to a 3.905 in bore and a 4 inch crank giving a total of 383 cubic inch motor. Thats a very good combo for when you do need to "beef up" your ls1. The ls1 383 should knock off a good chunk of that money you have for the 408, but you still won't have your 400+ c.i. Anyways... good luck with your build in whatever you decide to go with!

If your car is completely stock, I can see why it would cost 15k. Engine alone definately can be done for under 10k. Its the supporting mods that can get it to 15k depending on what brand parts or beyond with labor. I think your calculations are correct. Trust me, I've done it.

Why waito to blow your motor? Save a few bucks and SELL the motor you have now while it's still good and that will take a chunk out of the cost. If it were my money I'd buy the LS3 drop in and pull the cam and sell it on evilbay and drop in a bigger cam and see where that got me. That would be less than $8k and have warranty and still probably put down 450+ to the wheels...
