r=1/2 bore
L=distance piston travels (stroke)
C=number of cylinders

bore=3.9
stroke=3.62
ya, i had to think back to 11th grade math after reading it a second ti,e.

You squared the diameter of the cylinder, not the radius. Where did you get 0.7854? Either you typed something wrong or got the right answer by chance.

volume of a cylinder = pi * r^2 * height (stroke in this case)
then multiply by 8 since there are 8 cylinders

Displacement = pi * (3.9 inches / 2)^2 * 3.62 inches * 8 cylinders
= 345.95 inches^3

no that is the right answer, you will get the right anwer everytime.

my method is right, this method is right. its simplified math. there are a lot of simplified formulas.

my method is the method commly used by engine builders, the other method is typically used by math people.

ill lay it out for you

3.898X3.898X.7854x3.62=43.19992

43.19992X8=345.59936

and your getting different answers, becuase your not using true numbers. yours are off by 2 thousandths.

here, using your method and correct numbers

(3.898/2)=1.949
1.949X1.949=3.7986
3.7986X3.14=11.9276
11.9276X3.62=43.17791
43.17791X8=345.42328

~170 thousandths^3 difference between methods.

Who's not using true numbers?

You've got bore to three decimal places and stroke only to two. And also rounded pi to 2 decimals as well.

Need to rethink your methods before commenting on others lack of "TRUE" numbers.

Try 345.789645.

Ah I see where that 0.7854 came from

we'll say D=displacement, B=bore, and S=stroke

D = (B/2)^2 * pi * S
D = (B^2) / (2^2) * pi * S
D = (B^2)/4 * pi * S
D = B^2 * S * pi/4

since pi/4 = 0.7854

D = B^2 * S * 0.7854

i wont say its a 350.. because its simply not... when people ask if its a 350 i say no, 346, they say same thing as a 350.. i say no, its a 346 ls1.. and they say something along the lines of not being as good as a 350...

i almost feel stupid telling people i have an "ls1" or a "346"... about 1 in 50 people know what the hell either of them are.. i know im not the ignorant one, they are.. but it almost makes me feel like an idiot.. they usually look at me like i dont know what im talking about..

Yea, this is exactly what I tell people when they ask me what size my engine is, I've got it printed out on a laminated card.
If I'm in a hurry *I just tell them it's an LS1* which if they don't know what that is they're not worth talking about cars with anyway.

i never understood why in cubes people would always make sure they call it a 346 or 347 instead of rounding it to 350, BUT in cc's you just always hear people rounding to 5.7 litres instead of saying "ya I have a 5.65 litre engine" (or whatever it may be) lol.

I think it may have something to do with back in the ponycar/muscle car wars of the 60s when they would advertise all there cars with the 347 small block or the 348 super screamer or the 351 flow pac (just examples but you get the idea). So these numbers started to stick and people would refer to the ford as a 348 but if you had a chevy it was "ONLY" lol, a 347.

Same crap they all set out to build a 350.
