Default Whats LS mean??

I just had a thought today and couldn't think of a good answer. What does the LS, in LS1,2...so on, mean??? I have tried googling it, but can't seem to figure it out? anyone know

i truthfully dont think it means anything really, just kind of a series lt1 go to ls1, i have no clue if any of that is factual though, just my .02

Zo6, LS1, WS6, Z51 all just rpo codes for packages
there are tons these are just the good ones that matter and get badges

Just an RPO code,like WS6 and WU8, and Z51, and 1LE, etc. LS been used for a while. I believe 1970 chevelles had an LS-6 as an option.

I kinda figured it was just a rpo code, but didn't really know for sure. wonder how gm come up with them? pull letters from a hat? flip a coin? who knows

Yep RPO code, standard engine in the 454 SS Chevelle was the LS-5 and the optional was the LS-6, worth lots of $$$ today.

It used to stand for "luxury sport" on car models. I'm not sure if that's what it stands for with the engine.

Edit: BTW, LT used to stand for 'luxury touring'
