Default Example of LS1 Capability

My commute is 105 miles going to work, and it usually takes me 1:45 to get there.(All Highway)

I got on the Interstate(I-80) at 6:05 and made it to work at 6:56. The the speedo didn't dip under 120mph for the entire trip and was buried several times when traffic permitted. The engine didn't smoke/overheat one bit, and everything is still running well on the car now. I changed the oil when I got home of course.

I know it was extremely dumb and irresponsible of me to go that fast for that long, and I was also very luck that I didn't pass a State Trooper, but I also thought that it was incredible that the engine could handle that abuse and still run like a champ.

Just Thought I'd Share. Feel free to flame or add comments.

The day i picked my 02 SS up it only had 28,153 miles on it and female driven so i was cruising @ 140 for about 20 min.to clear the carbon out of it on the way home but my girlfriend was 15 min ahead of me so i knew there were no state troopers ahead of me.

Not too bad. However, I am more suprised you didn't get pulled over than about the car holding up.

A4 and I feel the same way you do. I always make sure I do <60mph@ 1850rpm when I'm on the Highway.

As far as the rpm's I saw on Saturday, they fluctuated between 4500 and 6500 when buried the speedo or I had to "slow down" to pass someone on the shoulder, which the car did very well with. The damn thing hugged the road like it was a relative going away into the Marines.

About not getting pulled over, yeah I think I was the luckiest man alive that day. There's usually always a state trooper posted under a bridge, but....not that day. Even if there was a trooper to spot and chase me down, in the state of mind I was in, I don't think I would have stopped. They could have arrested me, impounded the car, whatever....just as long a I punched into work on time.

Cool

i noticed LS motors beg for you to abuse them. when i romp on mine they feel stronger. imo nothing touches LS motors for potential and efficency.

GM designed a great engine.

Why? Gas Mileage?

I dont see whats so suprising about the LS1 being able to take this "abuse". The countless passes and laps LS1's have made down various racetracks should be enough of a test to show you they are built to fly.

So for nearly 50 minutes you drove 120+ miles per hour and never passed a cop? Sounds kind of crazy that someone didn't call in about you or report you. I guess you are one lucky guy to drive that fast for that long and not get caught.

not the smartest thing to do, but really probable wasnt that abusive on the car, in top gear im sure even with a A4 you would be under 3500 RPM's so really it isnt like you kept it in 3rd pegged at 6000k

i noticed recently how high of rpms some of my friends cars run at on the highway. some of them are around 2500-3000 at like 60. for whatever reason i just feel like i'm gonna hurt something if i run over 2k for an extended period of time.

No really, I'm more surprised you made it through than the car. (Though it is good to know) My brother did the same crap on a trip and ended up in a coma for a month and a hospitalized for 6.

Here's a few pics for fun:

That was his old Celica.

LOL at some of the replies...being over 2k rpms is NOTHING. Hell, most of the old school sbc and bbc guys aren't worried about issues until cruising rpm is above 3500 rpm

my old 350 cruised like a champ at 2800...with a 3 speed auto you have to if you want to be on the highway

my setup now is right at 2k at 70, would be fine higher but I start to notice more mpg drop above that for extended periods

for reference my moms pontiac torrent is at like 2200 at 65mph stock

My 6 Speed cruises at about 1600 rpms at 65mph. What part of I-80? I have driven from Sacramento to Reno a few times but its a twisty road over Donnor Summit.

Yeah man like i said, i was very lucky. I tried to be as polite as possible . Like when I'd be flying up behind someone and they'd see me coming so fast and move, when i passed I'd give them "the hand". I know it's dumb but man my job was on the line and I had to make it there.(At least that's how i felt at the time)

As far as those "pics for fun" , man that is sad to see/hear. I wasn't "playing" in traffic at all. I was trying to get to work. I know that doesn't make a difference, but I wasn't out there with some big grin on my face; "Ohh I'm Having Fun". It was the dumbest, most irresponsible, reckless, stupid thing I've ever done and I'm not proud of that. I just wanted to share about the engine and how it stood up to the drive.

LOL. Before you get too excited read my post about oil pressure issues after racing a porsche on the autobahn.

At 172mph.

My biggest issue with cruising at 130-150 is the noise/vibrations. So I end up crusing at 95-105, and getting passed by BMW and Audi wagons all day long.
