Example of LS1 Capability
I got on the Interstate(I-80) at 6:05 and made it to work at 6:56. The the speedo didn't dip under 120mph for the entire trip and was buried several times when traffic permitted. The engine didn't smoke/overheat one bit, and everything is still running well on the car now. I changed the oil when I got home of course.
I know it was extremely dumb and irresponsible of me to go that fast for that long, and I was also very luck that I didn't pass a State Trooper, but I also thought that it was incredible that the engine could handle that abuse and still run like a champ.
Just Thought I'd Share. Feel free to flame or add comments.
As far as the rpm's I saw on Saturday, they fluctuated between 4500 and 6500 when buried the speedo or I had to "slow down" to pass someone on the shoulder, which the car did very well with. The damn thing hugged the road like it was a relative going away into the Marines.
About not getting pulled over, yeah I think I was the luckiest man alive that day. There's usually always a state trooper posted under a bridge, but....not that day. Even if there was a trooper to spot and chase me down, in the state of mind I was in, I don't think I would have stopped. They could have arrested me, impounded the car, whatever....just as long a I punched into work on time.

I dont see whats so suprising about the LS1 being able to take this "abuse". The countless passes and laps LS1's have made down various racetracks should be enough of a test to show you they are built to fly.

No really, I'm more surprised you made it through than the car. (Though it is good to know) My brother did the same crap on a trip and ended up in a coma for a month and a hospitalized for 6.
Here's a few pics for fun:

That was his old Celica.
my old 350 cruised like a champ at 2800...with a 3 speed auto you have to if you want to be on the highway
my setup now is right at 2k at 70, would be fine higher but I start to notice more mpg drop above that for extended periods
for reference my moms pontiac torrent is at like 2200 at 65mph stock
As far as those "pics for fun" , man that is sad to see/hear. I wasn't "playing" in traffic at all. I was trying to get to work. I know that doesn't make a difference, but I wasn't out there with some big grin on my face; "Ohh I'm Having Fun". It was the dumbest, most irresponsible, reckless, stupid thing I've ever done and I'm not proud of that. I just wanted to share about the engine and how it stood up to the drive.
At 172mph.
My biggest issue with cruising at 130-150 is the noise/vibrations. So I end up crusing at 95-105, and getting passed by BMW and Audi wagons all day long.
