Dyno numbers are more then just a tuning tool. They are also an indicator of the cars current potential. A 500 rwhp car can make it down a track quicker then a 400 rwhp car. The trick is to take that dyno sheet and use it to choose appropriate shift points, stall size, gears, ect.
If the setup is wrong however, then that 400 rwhp car can find itself taking the win and all the bragging rights

If you mean dyno queens, no. There are many rx7s and supras that have double the power as stock, but in the drag stock is faster because they have such huge turbo's they can spool them very fast.

Yes, using a dyno is important for tuning and getting an idea of a car's potential, but dyno numbers should not be the end goal... except for some of the weasels who are too chicken **** to go out and run their cars. They'd rather stand around and bench race, comparing peak dyno numbers like dick size. And again, as already pointed out, area under the curve is more important than peak.
