Valvoline 10w-30 only, with a Fram Tough Guard in my Z28
Valvoline 5w-30 only, with a Fram standard in my IS300 < The car has 130k and runs like new. . . This is the only combo of oil and filter that were used.

Redline 5w30 here...From what I have seen and heard first hand in dismantling race motors, Amsoil and Redline seem to be the best, and in addition to that I have also read on more than a few web articles that redline uses more base stock level 5 compounds than Amsoil. I have also heard more than one negative review regarding mobile 1, royal purple, Castrol and practically every other brand of oil ever made, those three being the most flamed of course.
Supposed flame arguments - mobile 1 uses base stock 3, rp uses bs 3 and detergents which reduce piston ring and engine seal life, and Castrol leading to a over average amount of build up.
In effort to not butcher what I seem to understand, all oils are made from key base stocks, levels 1 thru 5. Base stock 1 and 2 are conventional, while base stock level 3, 4 and 5 are synthetic, of a purer and higher quality as you go up.
End result is: Hardly any differences on any of our stock / slightly modified, daily driver / weekend warrior, $5,000 to $20,000 4th gens.
Case in point I do not pay full price for my redline and kn filter and if I had to I wouldn't for my 90,000 mile 98 camaro.
I hope this response is received well; most of this information came from my friends working in an engine shop of a respected long island business that is not a sponsor of this site and years of online research. I have also taken audience to a few hour long seminars by Castrol, mobile, royal purple, amsoil and redline.
Cheers

What sucks about regular Castrol?
That's a serious question.....
Reason I ask, is I couldn't find Havoline this spring, so I went to Castrol GTX. I'd swear my motor is noisier. Maybe it's just because I''m paying more attention, but, it seems a little noisier for longer into warmup.......

Is there anything to this, or is it my imagination?

I'm not running it again. If I can't find German Castrol, I'm running Penz Platinum again, I liked it the best.

This is some funny ****
Just change the oil when you should and it won't really matter what you use nowadays
I use GC and change it depending on how hard I beat the bitch
Prolly overkill. Guys on here using Wal- Mart brand with good results..... Lots of variables.

I've been using German Castrol for years but may switch cause I'm tired of the price. May use the Penzoil Platinum, Walmart has 5 quart jug for $20. Royal Purple is terrible and no oil additive is necesary. (restore? Lol) Groups 1-3 are mineral based, 4 and 5 are ester/PAO based. Ohh yeah all these oils have detergants in them too.

I looked up Penzoil Platinum, it's a synthetic if I read that right. I'm 2nd owner, been running dino oil since I got the car. It's got 53k miles on it. Would it hurt anything to switch to synthetic?

Yea there was a post on here somewere about a month or so ago were some agency tested a bunch of Royal Purples claims and alot of them turned out to be false and they filed alawsuit to make RP stop advertising a bunch of that stuff.Never really heard anything else about it tho.I personally run Q horsepower 10w 30 and i really like it.doesnt burn any and doesnt seem to break down very easy and no sludge
Edit:I run a napa gold filter too.

UOAs of Penzoil Platinum have shown it to be a very good oil. As far as stuff you can get from Wal-Mart, it's probably the best. Mobil 1 has been overrated ever since they went to group 3. Redline is great but spendy. Ams and German Castrol round out the top end.
