Default Thought my flexplate was broken, it was a converter?

With all of the horror stories I thought all of the noise coming from the tranny area was a flexplate. Nope, my left converter it turns out. I had my friend put the car in gear with the brakes holding it in place and it rattles like a SOB somewhere inside. Seems to really do it bad when under a load or just idling along.

Can I just gut this thing out or do I need to replace the whole thing?

Well can I? This thing is louder than a nagging wife.
