Go around to local business' and ask if they would like to buy advertisement on your car.
Chances are, it'll be really hard, unless you go to BIG shows and have awards already. People won't sponsor a "stock" car that is nothing special that people "intend to make awesome".

Sponsorship is a buisness deal. You must have something to sell the company that is giving you money. How will your car bring the company more business?
There are a few rice rocket companies that will "sponsor" your car for shows and such but the sponsorships are typically in the form of product discounts. In other words, I'll let you put my sticker on your car if you promise to only buy my overpriced then discounted merchandise.
If you want a serious cash sponsorship, you need a serious sales presentation and you need to meet with marketing directors and sales managers. Bottom line if you can't prove that a $5K sponsorship will bring them significantly more than $10K in sales ($5K in profit) you wont get sponsored.

Yeah you have to be able to make them more money than they are willing to give out. For instance, if you want a show car, make sure your car is looking real shinee and pretty, custom detail work like seats, some leather or cloth trimming, polished leather, bright beading wheels, darker than the devils heart tires, wax so deep you can see your soul, vibrant engine bay, and spotless undercarraige for companies that sale car products. Or if you want a track car, put some mean mods and have a sponsor that will be willing to sponsor a beautiful car with excellent equipment and looks, you can get any car shop to sponsor you then. Let a paint shop paint your car but the profit will probably be low on your end. Hope this gives an idea on what you might be getting into. good luck
