Is the engine still OK???

Here is the deal; I have a buddy that was going to sell me a 6.0L LQ4 iron headed longblock for $250.00. It was a dealer takeout because it had a coolant leak and it was misdiagnosed as a porous block. Ended up being a crack in the throttle body by the coolant nipples. Anyways, his barn that it was stored in caught fire.

The valve covers and timing cover are melted/distorted from the heat. He says if I still want it, I can have it for free. My question is, are the block, crank, rods, etc. still good? It had iron heads that I will not use. I just wonder if I should still take it since it is free and tear it down and have the block, crank, etc. checked out. What do you guys think? Is it worth the hassle?

That one's intersting..it takes about 1300* to melt Aluminum..about 1400* to warp Iron.

Personally I wouldn't take my chances.

You can always tear it down and have it checked out, or go ask a machine shop I'm sure they have heard of cases like this before.

take it and tear it apart its free why not? might be worth it. might not...

Kind of what I was thinking. Worse case I waste a few hours of my time and then have to take it to the scrap yard and get a few $$ for it.

it will be fine. If the plastic is only distorted and not melted in a pool in front of the engine. Needless to say every sensor will have to be replaced.

Its up to you how hot do you think the fire got and how bad is the plastic melted.

They aren't plastic..they are Aluminum which melts at 1200ish*..it got hot.

Oh its aluminum... probably not. Not sure its worth the money to get it checked out man. If it distorted that aluminum its possible for block issues no doubt.
