Yes, a special oil. For what its worth, this oil has it's own section on bob is the oil guy.com

When I bought my 16K mile WS6 it was burning Mobile 1 since day one. I read up on German Castrol on here and had to make the change. Once I did, not only did the car stop burning oil AT ALL throughout the entire summer season, my oil psi went up at cold idle, while cruising and under WOT.

Will never look back.

*It only comes in 0W30 weight and doesn't come in the big jugs, you only get them in the smaller 1 quart bottles. Here's some more reading for you.

Great oil. I just wish it was easier to find. Pepboys in my town has it but its always out of stock.

If you cant find the GC the next best is Pennzoil Platinum according to BITOG forums. Might try that next oil change.

My car has 99k miles and I am in Virginia (can get pretty cold in the winter and sometimes pretty hot in the summer). I have been running M1 10w30, think I can switch over to the german castrol without any problems?

I tried German Castrol and didn't notice any difference from what i usually use
(5w-30 Castrol Synthetic). I'm staying with 5w-30 Castrol Synthetic.

I use it. Quiets my motor down some, so it doesn't sound like ten guys beating their dicks on my intake.

0W-30.
But it MUST say Made in Germany on the back, and European Formula on the front.

Like so.

Always find it on special at autozone.
If you call and ask though, they won't know what the **** you're talking about.
Because they have the regular kind made in the U.S.A. there as well.

I used to use OW-30 too, but now Autozone doesn't carry it. Now, I use Pennzoil Platinum and I love it. It's also cheap!

I would like to quote this guy and say it applies exactly the same to me. Except my car had 85,XXX on the clock. It was ran with M1 then I bought the car in Nov. and put Quaker State Full Syn. in for the winter. Don't ever buy this stuff my car burned about a 1/2 quart in the time change til next spring. Then I put GC. This burned about a 1/4 quart til that fall. Since then I have done many oil changes and it doesn't burn a drop anymore. Also it runs very quite. I love the stuff.

Why would you switch if your car has ran fine for 100k miles.

Think about this. Why would you have a problem with an oil that is 0W30?? It has BETTER cold start protection than 10W30. In fact if it stays below freezing there then 10W30 isnt really protecting your engine anyways.

I have found two types, and I'm a little confused...

One that I'm used to that says made in Germany on the back (as shown in the picture above in a distinct euro bottle), and now Ive seen regular bottles of castrol (not the unique euro bottles) marked 0w30 that say European formula on the front and made in USA on the back. Kinda confusing to me anyone know what the deal is?

Well that thread that someone put up here stated that some of the GC oil was actually produced in the U.S. but not to much research was put into it so its basically a worse variation of the good stuff.

Theres three types of GC. You have to figure out how to read the date the oil was actually made to determine what variation it is.
Here's how you read the date:
Look at the bottom of the bottle, it'll say something like M05216xxxx

The 05 represents the year it was made. (2005 in this case)
The 216 represents the day it was made. (001 - 365)

1.) The U.S. made type
-No need to look at the date, it'll still say Made in the U.S.
-It was last made in 02
2.) The Green GC (They say its actually green
-It'll say "Made in Germany" on the back.
-Anything until and including M05010xxxx is Green.
-This stuff came out in 2002.
3.) The Gold GC
-It'll say "Made in Germany" on the back.
-Anything after M05010xxxx is Gold.
-This is the current GC.

I got this off of that website.. Hope it helps.

Edit: added the website

I swiched just last year because I kept reading threads like this so I figured why not? I can tell you my car burned about 1/2 quart of M1 5W-30 every oil change. The first time using GC I noticed that it used only about 1/4 quart of oil. When I driained the first time it was nasty. I don't even want to know what came out of my engine. Now on the second change ready for the 3rd I don't burn any oil and all the little annoying ticks and noises are gone. I would recomend the change to GC. I love it plus it is a GF-3 oil so it actually still has a lot of friction modifier content. Great stuff.

I've found it at both Pepboys (in abundance), and Autozone (they usually have a oil changes worth set up). Seems like it's getting more popular, as I'm seeing more of it on the shelves.
