What do you consider "losing oil like crazy?" Are you going through 1 quart a month, or 1 quart a week? If you are going through a quart a week or something ridiculous like that your car has to be showing some symptoms. How does the coolant and oil look?

I agree, please define "crazy" in a unit of measure, such as quarts lost per miles driven.

I've owned 4 LS1s, my '00 Trans Am used about 1 quart every 800-1000 miles, this one was my worst by far. My '98 Z28 doesn't seem to use even a drop of oil. My '99 and '02 both fell somewhere inbetween.

Agree with define "crazy". May wanna look at the underside of you car not just the pavement beneath. Check your plugs to see if they are wet......

Can you tell us how many quarts you had to add after 1,000 miles? I've never had a low oil light come on before, so I have no clue how low that would make you.

It usually comes on if you are running ~1 quart low.

What kind of oil are you using? I have used Mobil 1 in the past, and my car would burn a quart every 1 or 2k miles.

I will second SOMbitch's question.

Hmmm... I'm surprised I never saw this light pop on it my WS6 then. Usually I'd catch it when it was between .5 and 1 quart low.

To the OP, if you're losing 1 quart per 1,000 miles, that's not great but it's also not cause to tear the motor down either IMO. Like the others have said, check again for leaks. If none are found, it's probably burning off via the PCV system or getting past the rings.

This is what I would try first. M1 runs on the thin side, so I switched to their 0w40 weight. LS1s seem to respond well to oils that are on the heavy side of a 30 weight or the light side of a 40 weight. Been using the 0w40 now for 5 years in my LS1s with great results and rarely lose a drop between changes.

I don't want this to turn into a "which oil should I use" type thread, but I switched to Penzoil Platinum, and I dont use any oil. From my experience, M1 burns up quickly. Another benifit to using PP is that Autozone always has specials on it.

I've heard good things about that oil too.

M1 0w40 and 5w40 are much better for use in an LS1 than the 30 weight grades of M1. My '98 has never burned a drop of it, and my '02 uses between 0 and .5 quart in ~5,000 mile change intervals.
