Default N00b question about transmission

I just got into a 1998 Camaro SS, AUTO. Currently, it has a very mild cam, a 3200 stall, and bolt ons. Stock ls1 intake and stock heads. I was wondering do the SS's come with transmission coolers, stock? Also, are the trannies known for going out, with a stall?

Every one of these cars that was optioned with an auto trans came with a cooler. Makes no difference if it's an SS or a V6 or anything inbetween.

However, for performance applications, the stock cooler isn't enough. Most run an aftermarket unit in addition to or in replacement of the stock cooler (stock one is built into the radiator).

If the 4L60E has been built at some point (by a good builder), then it should hold up fine under the conditions you've listed. If it's stock, then high rpms will be your biggest enemy. Most cammed engines will want to be shifted well above 6k, which is a weakness for the stock trans. Excessive power and heat will also kill the 4L60E, but it doesn't sound like you're making that much power with those mods, and heat you can control with a deep pan, a good cooler, and lower fan settings. If you need to make this trans last for a while and don't know if it's built or not, then keep the shift points at or below ~6,000-ish rpm.

Not to hijack, but has anybody ran or setup a manual tranny cooler? Seems slightly tricky...
