I know they make jokes about f-body tachs, but...

Are they really THIS bad? I was out logging some timing changes today, and I noticed my tach is even more off than it was some time ago. It used to be about 100-200rpm off, especially at idle, but nothing too major. Today I noticed it was 400-600 and sometimes even 1000rpm off. Is this a PCM issue, or should I look into finding a new gauge cluster? I don't particularly want an aftermarket tach in the car. I don't remember my 99 being that way, except it was slightly off at 6000+rpm, is this more of a 98 thing?

Not a '98 thing. Mine is only off about 100rpm under all conditions.
All 4 of my LS1 cars have been off by about 100rpm on average. Same for all years.
Only gage that's different for the '98s is the temp gage.
