I was putting my VIN in on Compnine the other day and it doesn't show up with a build date and jsut says unknown. Tried some other VINs too and some cars had the same thing. Just curious why this is.

It's because that database is crap. A small portion of obvious info is accuarte but for the most part I cringe when people quote this thing. Like I saw one guy post asking what the LB9 engine was as Compnine's database showed a bunch of 98-99 Camaros as having this engine. A LB9 engine code is for a 305 TUNED PORT used from 85-92. Other stuff like truck codes showing up as f-body options, colors that were never offered, etc. It's grossly flawed and should be removed as a link of "accurate" info on this site.

The build date info seems accurate there. I've compared it to several build dates show on GM VIS, and it always matches.
