Cam moves in and out while retainer plate is installed?

Does it have the gear on the front? If not then yes it is perfectly normal. The cam can basically walk straight out of the back of the engine till it hits the rear cover. The cam itself is bigger on the rear-side of the retainer plate, and the timing gear is bigger on the front-side. So with everything bolted together the cam stays locked in place.
