Engine: 2004 GTO LS1
Purchased from a wrecked car. Stock engine from what I know.

Only thing I have done to the "water" side of the engine is install new Hypertherm 180° thermostat, removed the water temp plug on the passenger head and installed my one temp sender, and installed a surge tank.

So recently my water pump has started leaking from behind the "bell". It would sling coolant around and if it would sit for a while it would drip off of the crank pulley.

I have been noticing the engine sucking water, and attributed it to the water pump leaking, but now I'm not so sure...

Picture of the pump removal:

I remove the thermostat housing from the water pump and find this:

From what I can tell it is -NOT- the same size or style as the water pump seals. It is more square than the water pump seals. That, and all of the pump seals were still there... Unless it was from another water pump installation?

It is blue in color. The profile of the seal is flat on one side and rounded on the other side. It seems to be of a softer material than the water pump seals (like silicone compared to rubber).

So now I'm worried that the engine sucking water has something to do with this seal being gone.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time,
Kevin

Not sure if that's where it came from, but I have seen those water pump seals with the blue rubber before.

I think Felpro makes them with blue seals.

It looks to me like the pump or gasket was changed at some point and the whoever did it forgot to clean it out before re-installing.
