Default LS and ZZ

GMPP has an LS327 that works with a carburetor, an LS376/515 that works with a carburetor, an LS376/430 with an ECM kit, and LS E-Rod engines with 50-state ECM kits.

But their most popular crate engine is the ZZ4.

So what is a ZZ4 and how is it different from an LS ?

The ZZ4 is an old Gen I SBC engine that shares nothing in common with an LS series (Gen III & IV) engine except for the OHV arrangement and the number of cylinders.

You are looking at two entirely different families of engines here.

Okay, I found the three Chevrolet or GM V8 engine generations:

Gen I Chev, 350ci, 4" bore, 3.48" stroke
Gen II GM, 350ci or 5.7L, 4" bore
LS1 GM, 5.7L as 5.665L or 345.7ci, 3.90" bore, 3.62" stroke
LS327, 327ci, 3.78" bore, 3.62" stroke

Of course short stroke engines are generally for high RPM and HP while long stroke engines are generally for torque and emissions.

But the RPM limits:

ZZ4 Gen I, 5800 RPM
LS1, 6000 RPM
LS327, 6000 RPM

there is alot more to it than that. gen 3 blocks dont use a distributor they use coil packs and REQUIRE a computer for managment you cant just throw a carb on one and call it a day.

The biggest differnce is the head design, gen 3 engine heads share more with BB chevy heads than they do with there earlier gen small blocks, this better head design is what makes the ls engins perform so well over a old same cube size gen 1 engine.

also 3rd gens have a completly different firing order for better efficency. im sure there are a few other differnces but those are tha main ones.

No, the LS will work with a simple electronic ignition controller and a carburetor. That's just not the OEM setup. GMPP has LS327, LS376/515, and LS Circle Track that work this way.

They also have several LS for those who have an ECM and a LS376/430 that offers a ECM kit. But the new ECM kit is only about three-times the cost of an ignition controller.
