describe what you mean when you say driving with a heavy foot, what kind of driving are you talking about? do you mean accelerating super fast and shifting at 4-5k rpm?

Twice a year I make a 780 mile trip. If I set the cruise control at 75MPH I get 25MPG, if I set the cruise control at 65MPH I get 27-28MPG.

Driving slow will save you mileage over 8 miles, but you won't notice it. You will drive 2,920 miles a year at 8 miles a day. Let's say hypothetically you get 20 mpg and driving slower will give you a hypothetical 2 mpg (10%) more. You will save 13 gallons a year or $52 a year with gas $4 a gallon. Not worth it in my opinion. You probably blow more than $52 a year on useless crap that you don't need. ( I know I do) It will cost you $4.30 a month more to get 20 mpg vs. 22 mpg. Skip the coke and chips once a month and you can afford the 20 mpg.
If you drove 200,000 miles a year, the savings would be worth it. Using all of the same numbers from above, it would save you $3,636 a year. That would be worth it in my opinion. $300 a month would be a lot to save.
If you drive normally (no wheelies on green light, but you shouldn't be passed by a dead slug on a green light) you will get the best mileage. Also, make sure your car is in good tune. ie good plugs, good oil, clean filters, etc. If you really want more mileage, start taking load off of your engine. Get a cold air intake, full exhaust, electric water pump and fan, take weight out, etc. etc. etc.

Plus, it's just a lot more rewarding when you stay out of the gas for a while, because when you do go ahead and hit it, you're just like "Man, this thing pulls hard".

Drive normal for a tank and figure out your MPG. Then baby it for a tank and report back with your MPG for the two driving styles. Question answered. My car seems to knock down 20 MPG regardless of how I drive, unless I'm at the track.

I always baby mine and since I put a 3600 stall if I drive agressive theres a huge difference.I guess for manual guys its different but if I want to accelerate hard on the street Ill be revving real high with the loose converter and gas goes down quick.
Think about this tho, by babying it you save money int he long run not only from gas, but also from parts breaking. Car won't last if you drive it like you stole it every day, parts will break eventually
