Default 2001 Trans Am Issue

Last year I attended a rally in Missouri around Memorial Day Weekend. After the 3 days of fun I drove my bird 100 miles back home and parked it. 3 weeks later I started it and it started knocking instantly. I immediately shut it off and called a few friends. I started it for my friends (who know cars) and they said it sounds like a head issue. I agree. The knock sounds high up and is only coming from the passenger side. I have not yet pulled the heads but am going to build the engine anyway so who cares. I have heard that I can put 5.3 L GM heads on this engine ported, polished, and with upgraded springs. I want to do a mid line cam that will net me decent HP gains and still allow me to daily drive my bird in a pinch. Last thing I want is a set of headers. After all of this is done I have a great place to tune the car on a dyno. Just need advice on cam, heads, and headers. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

Budget?

I'd get heads with headers.
Pacesetters are great budget headers, and net very good gains.
TSP and Kooks make some of the best for the higher end.

As far as heads go, TSP can hook you up again. Talk to Matt@Texasspeed. He'll pair the heads and the cam to your liking.

Trying to keep my budget at or under $2000.00

I have also heard that the heads from the 5.3L in an Impala SS or Monte Carlo SS will work also.

Thank you. I will look him up. I am hoping for 450+ at the wheels but I am not holding my breath. Thank you again for the advice.

I'd make sure I had that knock narrowed down... Cylinder heads are not moving parts so they can't really knock.
