LS3 Purchase
Hey Guys,
Looking at buying my first LS motor for a transplant project. After helping a buddy put a LS1 in his jeep I'm really sold on these motors. My newbie question is I have an opportunity to purchase a new crate LS3/480hp with starter, all front accesories & bracket, harness, computer, pedal and bunch of other items to get it running with the exception of the transmission. My buddy wants $6300 for it and I believe this is a good price. Also can I get away with running an automatic behind this setup, I've read most people perfer the std. trans because of the different cam in this motor.
Thanks in Advance!

I have no idea about the price, but there is no problem using an automatic with an LS3. You can order an auto trans from the factory with this engine in the C6, and even aftermarket cams for that engine can be tuned to run just fine with an auto trans. So if an auto is what you want, it would be entirely possibile.

I recently bit the bullet on a used LS3 out of a 2010 Camaro. Still waiting for it to arrive.
Brand new those crate engines are like 6500 or so with no accessories or anything.
I think I've seen new ones on eBay from private sellers who dropped their projects go for like $5-5.5K.
Depending on the accessories, you're looking at like $800.
If the harness and computer were pulled form another GM vehicle, you're looking at like $200 for the harness and $150 for the computer.
Pedal is another $100 or so.
Seems your friends price is right along with what it should go for.
I would say go for it.
