That's the thing, once people start opening them up there are many things that can go wrong and hurt the life of the engine if done wrong.

I just bought a complete 4.8 out of my buddys truck with 270k miles. It didnt smoke knock use oil anything still ran perfect, he swapped in a 6.0 or it would still be in there.

Im getting ready to h/c/i my 98 with 108k.

it is really good to see all these guys with such high mileage engines and still driving them hard, it really goes to show how well made they are

Mine, is on its last leg, motor AND trans. My tahoe has 175K on it and still runs good and my 5.3 S-10 runs way harder than my 350 S-10 did. If I don't wait 30 minutes or so my 60' will fall off (about a tenth) so I think the trans is hurt for sure. I can't be more satisfied with it though. You just can't expect more IMO.

170,000 plus on mine and it still runs like a top. The rear diff is on its way out, but my mwc 9" will fix that. I am pulling the motor for a stroker soon, but plan to put this motor in another project, so it will live on!

Funny I find this thread, after a 150k mile ls1 hydrolocked a buddy and I have been trying to find a replacement. We put in an ls1 and got rod knock bad bearing, we bought an lq4 and found a bent rod. So after that much bad luck with all the ones we bought, we turned to the 200k mile ls1 pull out sitting in the garage that ran good from a parts car. So we will have it in and running by Sat. So not only has it lasted 10 years and 200k miles, we actually swapping it into a car haha.

Bottom end looked good, checked under the valve covers and all was well. Turned over by hand with plugs out and just a lil effort. Everything was a little dark from the miles, but looked great.

165,xxx on mine and still going strong. I want to cam it, but I know I shouldn't with the mileage. Might swap in a 6.0 then do it. Decisions, decisions...

go for it. just put a new oil pump/chain/lifters in and get a good tune. if the motor were to let go down the line you can reuse all the stuff you put into it.

My speedo reads almost 190k. Put on a zex wet kit 5k ago and shes still hanging in there. Only sprayed a couple times though.
Oh and i dd it to so it sees quite a few highway pulls to and from work.
Soon after i get another dd i wanna build a 6.0 for the car.
