Default Need to ship a trans? Heres a quick DIY

I recently sold a t56 and she has to go up to Wisconsin.
Here's a quick little walk through of how to pack a transmission.

All these products I purchased at the local Home Depot for around $50 bucks.
They even cut the plywood for me.

Parts list:
1ea 30" x 16" piece of plywood. 3/8" thick
4ea 3/8" O tie downs. I didn't get the coarse thread wood ones.
8ea 3/8" steel washers
1ea 45gal Plastic tub with wheels.
1ea old blanket/pillows for packing
100' of rope good for 225lbs

You can substitute which rope you use. This was 9.89 for 100'.

1. Start by drilling 4 holes in the plywood.
I just sat the transmission on the wood and guesstimated where to drill the holes. Make sure you don't put them in an area where they are sensors or plugs that the rope will catch on and break them.
Then put the tiedowns in the holes putting washers on each side to sandwich
the wood.

2. Label and bag any hardware. One thing the military has taught me. Hardware control.

3. I attached the bell housing with 2 bolts and laid the flywheel and clutch on the top.
Then I just crossed the rope over the top of the transmission and clutch assy. Run the rope around metal ears or brackets to keep the rope in place.
Finally, I put a section of rope over the center of the transmission to assure the clutch assy. won't move.

4. Padding so when ups/fedex decide to chuck your transmission across a truck it won' get completely destroyed.
I just used an old comforter. Old pillows also works well.
Keeps it warm for those cold truck rides...yeah.

5. Finally I roped over the sides of the container lengthwise and over the sides. This rope is pretty stretchy so make sure you pull it taught.

6. Don't forget to label your box. I put "This side up", "Fragile", and, "Heavy" on all sides of the box.

Hope this helps anyone that has never shipped something heavy like a transmission before.
