I bought my car w/ a 3" lm2 (i guess) catback. It is loud but not ridiculous b/c it has stock exhaust & cats, NY emissions suck & I don't want a hassle every year. Even though the po crossed the exhaust tips I am hopeing I can just swap the bullett muffler to something closer to throaty and not a rattle can (imo). Thanks.
here is the I think lm2 bullett muffler.

The "old school" sound that you mentioned can't be completely duplicated with cats still in place. Old cars didn't have cats, which results in a much sharper/more throaty exhaust note then the more smooth/mellow tone of a modern car with cats.
Only thing you can do to make it any louder or throatier than it already is, without touching the manifolds or Y-pipe, would be to replace the LM2 resonator with either a LM1 resonator or just a piece of straight pipe.

You should still be able to pass emissions with a y pipe. Only part that sucks would be the pass side cat. Not sure how bad it is in NY, but I passed emissions here in MD with cat to straight pipe. Also, just go on youtube and use some headphones.

For some reason, ls1 f-bodys don't seem to get the "old school" muscle car sound very easily. GMMG is probably the closest to the old school sound. That's what I run & personally with cats it's my favorite exhaust setup.
Some true dual setups and mufflex catbacks sound deep as well, but that can be hit or miss depending on the setup.
As for your setup, I would advise talking to Madhammer. Madhammer was the manufacturer for GMMG before they went out of business. They still sell the GMMG catback exhaust. But they also sell individual chambered mufflers. They could probably hook you up with a custom chambered bullet muffler to replace your loudmouth bullet.
Good luck. Getting your exhaust tone just right is tough. I went through five different setups before finding my favorite setup.
