1. Just like any motor that depends on how well its maintained and how its abused. If setup properly and maintained like a princess, yes it'll last a long time. If abused like a filthy $5 hood-rat, then not so much.

2. TEA is always a great choice for ported heads, Mike can also set you up with a great cam choice, but he resently pointed me to Geoff at EPS for a custom cam.

3. Roughly 550-600 hp before you start to push the envelope. The stock rod bolts are more well known to be the weak point.

reading all these posts is making me want to go dyno my motor just to see what it makes, because it runs VERY WELL,
all it is , is a stock ls1 short block with ls1 hot cam ,ls6 intake, 317 heads milled to 64cc, and its in a 68 camaro with the 6speed
i have been reading alot of threads about the 317 heads, and it seems that almost every body has a differant opinion,
knowing now what i know, this is going to sound crazy, but i has c5 427 block and 427 rotating assem. with 317 heads, and it made right at 610 to the rear wheel and i sprayed 150 shot and it made 780rwhp, to me that is pretty good
when i had the heads flowed, the guy said he has never seen a 317 flow as much as these, so they had a little work on them.

317's flow as well as 243's. They just have a bigger combustion chamber than the 243's. The only problem with milling them to bring the compression back down is that you have to go with a lower lift on your cam, or flycut the pistons.

I think the LQ4's were going for about $2-300 less than the LQ9's when I bought mine. Not a huge difference.

They are both great engines, but the added compression give the LQ9 the edge.

LQ4 (9.4:1) = 300-325hp/360-370tq
LQ9 (10.0:1) = 345hp/380tq

Also, if you are keeping the heads, stay away from the 99-00 models, as they used iron heads.

-----edit-----

I just remembered the LQ4 has a U in the VIN and the LQ9 has an N. But I didn't see a stamping anywhere on my block.
Not all 99-00 engines had iron heads. I've seen plenty of trucks of that year with aluminum 317's. I believed only the early 99's had iron heads. And they were few and far between.
