It doesn't matter if the piston is moving up or down....there's either a head or a crank for the piston to crash into. I do agree there's less chance of trashing the block.

carbon fiber piston....no.... but a CMC piston? yes... here at GE we are already using carbon ceramic in our stage 1 shroud for the LEAP engine... and will soon be using them as turbine blades in the GE-9X......
