What motor is this

if it had 799’s from the factory then regardless of it being a 4.8/5.3 it will have flat top pistons. So the OP shouldn’t waste his time with doing that.
is the block aluminum? If so it’s a 5.3, if it’s iron it COULD be a 4.8 but the fact that it has DOD means it’s 5.3....but he could have swapped that cover over. From memory I don’t ever remember seeing a 4.8 ever get DOD...but I could be wrong.

🤦dum♂️ Do your homework....later 5.3 HO’s had flat top pistons, and all (to my knowledge) gen4 5.3’s had flat top pistons and being that this engine in the picture is a gen4 then I’d say it has flat top pistons. This isn’t some LM7 5.3...

I kept referring to the Gen III 5.3/4.8 but those did not come with 799's. I just learned this about 2 months ago when an aluminum 5.3 showed up with 799's and sure enough flat top pistons. I certainly do not claim to know everything there is to know about LS engines but I have built a few with my first being an LSX 427 and as with any profession if your really into it then you'll never stop learning...
