I am assuming that you mean that the head is rounded off, not that the treads are stripped, right?
First of all, it is not an 8mm but a 5/16, small but important difference as you have found out. Get a box end 5/16, not a socket, and try again. With the box end on the bolt head, tap it a couple times with a hammer to break it loose. It has red lock tight on it. Good luck.
And always replace this bolt with a new one that comes with the lock-tight on it. Never re-use this bolt. New bolt is like $2 or $3.

The factory bolt comes with a red thread locking compound on it, it may not be the same as the Loctite brand. But buying a new factory bolt is each time you replace it is cheap peace of mind.
This is probably the one bolt on the entire car that you do not want to fail. So you have to ask yourself, do I feel lucky?
It will only cost the price of a new bolt and a rear end fluid change to get that peace, so do you feel lucky?
