I’ve put a lot of those miles on them myself. We check mileage after each fill up. You have to “push” the smaller engines harder in the vans, than the 6 liter vans, for the same load or weight, hence the mileage difference. We maintenance our vans every 3500k and keep them clean.

Early architecture of the 5.7 blocks was not ideal. They had some slight windage issues that were fixed in the LS6 block. But finding a true LS6 block is not easy these days and the 5.3 was a good alternative.
