Default 98 Camaro Power Steering Fluid change what fluid?

Hi all,

I know this has been covered lots about what fluid to use but I am an England so its tricky to get the correct power steering fluid here and pricey etc. AC Delco etc.

Is Dexron VI (6) ATF usable or not a good idea?

By the way what colour is the AC Delco Approved power steering fluid?

Thanks all

Alex

The original fluid was clear in color. Here is a link to the correct fluid (current AC Delco part number is 19329450 for 16 ounce bottle; there is also a larger 32 ounce bottle if so desired):

Summit does offer international shipping options, but I'm not sure about the cost involved.

I've heard of folks using ATF in some power steering applications, but I have not (and would not) personally use it in this application.

ATF is a hydraulic fluid, it will work as a power steering fluid.

Fords come with ATF as their power steering fluid so it’s common.
Many tow trucks run ATF as hydraulic fluid including all of my tow trucks.

Any hydraulic fluid will work fine though if you do change it be sure to drain and replace all the fluid with your desired choice.

Plenty of information and tutorials on the internet on how to do a power steering flush on Fbody’s.

GM pumps from that era aren't really particular about fluids. Just use ATF. you'll be fine

ATF might work fine, but what is the advantage to using it vs. specific power steering fluid...just the cost?

ATF has friction modifiers in it for the Clutches in the Transmission, Auto or Manual. Also has detergents in it to reduce the sludge buildup in the Transmission.

ATF and Power Steering Fluid are both 5W Hydraulic Fluid as mentioned. I've used both in Power Steering Systems, ATF just runs cleaner.
