I thought it was based on the type of tires you got with the car? Mine doesn't have one though, the cops took it out, B4C special.

My Formula came with the cheap tires and 2.73 gears, and its speed limiter was still set at 162. They may have done it with the V6 cars, but AFAIK all of the V8 cars had it set at 162 from the factory. B4C's are another story... I'm just talking about the consumer model car.

Me and my bro took our old '96 Camaro, V6, 5 speed, to 125 many times, burying the needle against the stop, haha.

Reading all this makes me sad.
I have a speed limiter on my 1994 Trans Am, I can only go 108.

Had my speed limiter removed last week. Have not tried it yet, probably won't for a long time.

I got my car with crappy H-rated michelin's. I suppose the past owner was a poor person with no lead foot. So the fastest i've gone is 95 racing my friends camaro. Waiting till next year to get new Z rated tires then the fun will be had. I don't think i'll be burrying the needle though thats insane. The fastest i've ever gone was 135 in a 350Z that was pretty slick very stable for the speed but it was a weak pull from 120 on. Can't wait to see what the T/A can do from 100 on it seems like it has alot of top end compaired to the Z.

i've only taken mine to about 130 but it was still pullin hard, just didn't want a ticket for 80 over the speed limit or something so i got off of it.

V8's top speed is also limited to the speed rating of the tires that came on the car. I think all late production V8 Firebirds came with Z rated tires (I know this is true for 2002 models) when I looked at base Z28's Z rated tires were an option so they had base V8 cars that were limited to 124mph. GM wouldn't ship a car with a 162 mph limiter with H rated tires.

my 3.4L V6 top speed was ~115 mph
my buddy's 3.8L's top speed was ~120 mph

i think a few '98 V8's were limited to ~110 mph or so because of a junk rated tire package or something. forget which rating.

Moving this to General LSX Discussion (from Pontiac Firebird forum) since all the replies are about how fast everyone has gone in their cars.

to you guys saying you have never gone over 100 in your F-body, wtf? are you serious. I can't believe you haven't ever mashed it on an open highway to at least like 120. O well, your missing out! Anyways, the fastest I have gone in my car is 145 and I let off b/c I have too many speeding tickets as it is, not to mention 145 is pretty damn fast, I think.

correct. unless your car came with z rated tires; 245's or 275's then your car has the 162mph limiter. if the car came with the 235's (which mine did) then your limiter is set to 118 (according to my HPT). Dont remember the RPO codes off hand, but they'll tell you along with the tire information what your car originally came with. I believe it was 2k that GM discontinued the 235's and 245 z rated tires were standard.
