Default Need some advice looking at a 00 SS.

Ok, Im new to the GM's (only owned fords and one DSM) and I have found a 2000 SS A4. Its got 50k on the clock, you can tell an older person has owned it because its bone stock, and has all service records. It just had a new rear end put in it at a local dealership ($1900 ) and seems to be a pretty clean car. My question is, what problems do I look for? Im especially scared of the tranny because the only automatic Ive ever owned has been my explorer I currently drive. Any help is appreciated!

BTW, what kind of gas mileage do you A4 guys get? I was getting 19 mpg in town with my 99 Cobra even with the 4.10's.

if its stock and has been maintained autos in these cars are fine. even modded these trans. hold up. i wonder why the rear went on a stock car. maybe the pinion seal leaked for awhile and the bearings went.


this sounds like a tight car. look for interior wear like the seats. the motors are strong as **** and can take alot of abuse so youre probably ok there.




look for obvious things like brakes ,tires, paint ect.

the tranny should be fine in stock form or with mild bolt-ons. the REAL problem comes in when you throw in a cam and raise the shift points and rev limiter. i'm beginning to find the weakest link in a 4L60E is its ability of handle rpm's. a 4L60E will likely take 400rwhp with stock shift points better than 300rwhp if the shift points are increased.

RPM's are the weakest link in the tranny, then heat, then power IMO. if the tranny is maintained, sees stock or mildly above stock power levels and if you throw on a tranny cooler, it should last a while. they're not great transmissions, but they're not as bad as the wrap they get on this site. a built 4L60E from one of these sponsors frequently handle 500rwhp all day long.

That might be true if you're shifting the 300rwhp car at 6900rpm.

Raising the shift points won't hurt so long as you stay within the stock 6200rpm rev limiter. Factory shift points are at 5900rpm; you can go up to the 6100 range without any significant increase in wear.

Actually, IMO the 4L60E is a pretty damn good trans. They will last a very long time at stock to near stock power levels if fluid temps are kept under 200.

well yea, who would raise their shift points 100-200 rpms, kinda a waste

i also agree that the 4L60E is underrated. yes, if you throw in a cam, are shifting a 7000rpms and make 450rwhp, your stock tranny is going to die! but what car's tranny WOULDN'T die at that point?! show me any car in production under $100,000 with an auto tranny that will take 450rwhp shifting at 7000 rpm's and last for years?

Well, if you still have a stock internal car, you can see small benifits from raising the shift points to just a tad (about 100rpm) below the rev limiter. The gains obviously aren't huge, but I've noticed a tad more MPH at the track by doing that with stock internals on the '98-'00 cam. Might not be as benifical on the smaller '01+ cam though, never tested that.

I'd never recommend to raise the factory rev limiter while retaining the stock valvesprings, but you still have a little room to move the shift points while keeping the 6200rpm limit.
