Default NEED SOME HELP with arguement

I need some help argueing with a roomate of mine. He doesnt understand cars really at all so if you could put things simply maybe he could understand...I have tried but I cant convince him. He believe that 2 cars 1 car with a big engine (lets say sbc) and the other with a small engine (lets say a 4 cylinder). If both cars have the same gearing, the same transmission gearing, the same tires bla bla bla. Will both the cars be going the same speed at the same RPM in the same gear?

Only if:

1. They have the same transmission/final output ratio
2. They have the same size tires
3. They are operating at the same RPM in the same gear

Yes... and no.

If the cars are exactly the same except for the engine, then at the same speed in the same gear the engines will be turning the same RPM, but...

Since the V8 makes more power (and more importantly torque) it can be in a higher gear than a I4, therfore turning less RPM's. (this is how 300-400hp LS1's can get the same MPG as a 100-200hp imports )

thank you guys....i ended up having to relate it to a bike because he didnt really realize the affect of gearing and how there are gears in the differential and not just transmission. bassicly he just thought that a big engine would go faster at the same rpm given ALL other factors equal.

The big engine would be making a lot more torque at the same rpm but velocity and acceleration are two different things.
